Every year I have my students write a poem in response to a microaggression about their identity. Sometimes we feel so much pressure to respond in the moment and then frustration that we never got to address it with this person. With this assignment my students get to release that frustration in a way that is emotionally healthy, supportive, and contextualized in systemic oppression. This way they practice never having to accept people’s comments as “just a joke” 🙄 Here are some examples of the signs they made afterwards with both the microaggression in the center and a glimpse at their response! - Ms. Hasan 💕 (@lumahasan)
The hypocrisy. 😡
How would you define a good teacher?
Even after all of these years teaching, sometimes I feel discouraged and I dwell over how much better of a teacher I could and need to be. But when I get notes like this, from a young woman who isn’t even actually a student in any of my classes, it forces me to redefine what being a good teacher means. And then I ask myself millions of questions. Like what does it actually mean to be a good teacher? Does it mean the students feel safe in my presence to be who they are and grow? Does it mean that they learn the content I’m responsible for teaching them? Does it mean they learn how to critically think and advocate for themselves? Does it mean I prepare them adequately for college? Does it mean teaching kids how to have empathy and compassion? Does it mean expanding world views? Does it mean all of these things or does being able to do any one of these things equal being a good teacher? #teachingwhilemuslim #teachersofinstagram
New blog post❗️Link in bio ‼️ Decided it was time to go off again on irresponsible people who say and do irresponsible things 😡 I’m sick of people trying to justify the ignorant things people say. As educators we should absolutely have higher expectations of the adults we’re putting in front of our children. That’s not to say we should shame people for still being in the process of learning. We’re ALL always learning. However, I will not turn my head or stay silent when people don’t think before they speak. Anger and action will always be my response and I will never apologize for it.
